Papers include correspondence, clippings, records and other materials collected by Norris from 1928 to his death in 1952. Most of his papers prior to 1928 were destroyed in a fire at the First Baptist Church, Ft. Worth, Texas. The papers document the fundamentalist movement with the denomination from the 1920’s into the post World War II period. Topics include the 1928 presidential campaign, the evolution controversy, Norris’s charges of Communist sympathies on noted American churchmen, and his standing controversy with the agencies of the Southern Baptist Convention and the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Significant correspondents include; E. P. Alldredge, B. H. Hillard, Louie D. Newton, L. R. Scarborough, G. Beauchamp Vick, T. T. Shields, C. P. Stealey, and Victor I. Masters. Sound recordings have been separated from the collection and catalogued individually. |

Southern Baptist pastor, editor, and leader of the fundamentalist movement among Southern Baptists in the period 1910 to his death in 1952. He was a graduate of Baylor University and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as editor and owner of the Baptist Standard, the Baptist paper of Texas during 1908-1909. Norris served as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Ft. Worth, Texas from 1909 until his death in 1952. In 1935 he became pastor of the Temple Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan and remained in that position until 1950. In 1917, he began publishing the newspaper the Searchlight (later renamed the Fundamentalist). |
